I've been shooting for over 30 years across more than 250 cameras and 300 lenses. After years of bouncing between systems -- Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and others -- I've landed on a setup that works for how I shoot today. Below is what's currently in my bag.

Current Camera Kit

Cameras

  • Nikon D850 -- My primary camera. After cycling through Nikon's Z mirrorless lineup, I came back to a DSLR. The D850 is a proven workhorse with fantastic image quality, and there's something about the optical viewfinder and the mechanical feel that just clicks for me. This may be the last DSLR Nikon ever makes, and it may just be me clinging to the past, but I am going to hang on to this one as long as I can.
  • Nikon Z6iii -- My video-capable body and backup for fast-paced work. It handles well, autofocus is excellent, and it's light enough to carry all day without complaint.
  • Nikon Z30 -- A tiny DX body I keep around for vlogging and casual video. Paired with the 24mm DX lens, it's an unobtrusive little setup.
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max -- Always in my pocket. The computational photography is genuinely impressive, and I've made large prints from iPhone files that hold up surprisingly well.

Lenses

  • NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 -- My most-used lens. 40mm is my go-to focal length -- wide enough for street and environmental shots, tight enough to isolate a subject. Small, sharp, and disappears on the camera.
  • NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 -- A pancake lens that turns any Z body into a compact setup. Great for days when I want to travel light and shoot wide.
  • NIKKOR Z 24-120 f/4 -- My most recent lens which I got mostly for video work, but I had the really old original film version of this lens and it was horrible. This one is amazing.
  • NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G -- A classic F-mount fifty. Works beautifully on the D850 and adapts well to the Z bodies. Reliable, sharp, and affordable enough that I don't worry about it.
  • NIKKOR 50mm f/1.2 Ai-S -- Manual focus, all metal, and renders like nothing else in the bag. This is the lens I reach for when I want character over clinical precision.
  • NIKKOR 55mm f/2.8 Micro Ai-S -- My macro lens. Manual focus keeps me deliberate, and the rendering at close distances is gorgeous.
  • NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8 Micro AF-S -- For macro work where I need autofocus and more working distance. Sharp across the frame and doubles as a solid portrait lens.
  • NIKKOR Z 24mm f/1.7 DX -- Lives on the Z30 for video. Fast, light, and the DX crop gives a useful ~36mm equivalent field of view.

Film Gear

I don't shoot film very often anymore, but these are the pieces I held onto and still work today, I just don't put a roll of film in them as often as I should.

Canon AE-1

Originally my mom's camera. Fully mechanical, fully manual, and still works perfectly. Paired with the Canon 50mm f/1.4 FD, it's a timeless setup.

My Full Shooting Data

Over the years I've shot with gear from many manufacturers. My Lightroom catalog holds close to 800,000 images and serves as a personal archive of every camera and lens I've used. This is a long ongoing project, but I wanted to share it here as I went. If you have used Lightroom for any period of time, you know it's a collection of data, huge amounts of data, and I decided I wanted to use that data to build something useful. So I am in the process of building out all my data into usable pages by manufacturer, camera, and lenses.
