Exploring Wind Creek State Park Marina
I love getting to go out to different marinas to see the sailboats and hear the sounds of the water (even in winter). Every marina is different and they all change constantly. For me, it means there are always new opportunities for boat or sailboat photography throughout the year. At least there are in this part of the country. If you aren't familiar with the park, Wind Creek State Park is the public's access to Lake Martin just outside Alexander City in Southeast Alabama. It's a huge state park and has a fairly large marina, shop, several boat ramps, and a large number of slips and dock access.
Last week I was able to take a few hours to do some photography down by the water. And yes, it was brutally cold for our area, especially super early in the morning, but at least there was sunshine. It was somewhere around 34° on this particular day, but it was also virtually empty, peaceful, and super quiet. There was one fisherman in a bass boat that gracefully tolerated some random guy taking photos in the freezing cold. I hadn't been to this marina since we bought a little Catalina 22 several years ago to clean up, fix up and sell.
There were still plenty of boats to walk around. Being January they were in hibernation and not at their cleanest, but that didn't bother me at all. I just enjoyed being nearby. My client photography work for 2024 includes a lot more of this type of photography, so if you like boats and water you are in the right place.
